Female tweens are increasingly more aware of fashion and beauty trends than their aged counterparts—me included. I don’t think I spent as much time on the color of my hair, makeup, clothing or accessory decisions as today’s tween and I’d like to hope it is due to being raised in a house full of men rather than a delayed sense of fashion. I’m not sure which it was, maybe both. Regardless…I am keenly aware that today’s tweens control a decent percentage of a family’s financial expenditures on everything from the latest and greatest electronic gadgetry to label-laden designer duds. I’m impressed with this fascinating statistic and wonder, since MTV is no longer the go-to vehicle for what is hip, if reality television has a role in this development?

Young women are definitely more in tune with how they wish to present themselves to the world. Not all want to have their hands perfectly manicured at all times, but at some point, most of them take notice. How they smell, how they dress—it all becomes a topic of conversation in the lunchroom, classroom, locker room and at sleepovers. What’s more, any business with a product aimed at this youthful set, spends a deliciously-sized marketing budget to reach them—via viral videos, social media, and inset video game messaging. Crafty, I tell you…very clever.

A trend that nearly bumped me off my chair and onto the floor is ‘designer vagina.’ I lie to you not….there are plenty of young women now spending their money (or their parents) dressing up a special part of their bodies that parents have taught them no one sees but themselves and their doctor! I was in complete shock.

The trend of ‘vatooing’ and ‘vajazzling’ gained momentum after celebrities began donning uniquely placed artwork….gasp…via pictures on Twitter!

What are a ‘vatoo’ and a ‘vajazzle you ask with curiosity?’ Simply outlined, women wax or laser remove pubic hair and instead of strutting around al fresco beneath their pretty or comfortable swimwear and underwear, they instead, decorate the newly bare areas with temporary tattoos (i.e. vatoo) or instead, add some sparkle with glued-on jewels (see photo insert right).

It’s not just the celebrities, but the salons that cater to them and the masses that have added this unique service to their list of hot wax and laser removal services. The Real Housewives of New York City’s (BRAVO) entrepreneurial Completely Bare Salon owner Cindy Barshop is leading the charge in America’s fashion city with her own rendition of a vatoo and Vajewel(TM). Thanks to the clamor around reality television (and yes, admittedly, I’m a follower of several shows myself), more young ladies are dipping their youthful toes into these unique forms of body decoration…so parents, be aware.

MoxieMom (Founder of The Misanthropic Housewife Blog) recently dedicated a few highly humorous posts to this trendy focus. She writes, “Your private parts are NOT a craft project and your vagina certainly does not need a wig!” See her blog here for more: http://misanthropichousewife.blogspot.com/ . And, I have to agree with her. I’m an absolute champion of hygienic grooming, but decorating the vajajay seems several steps too far for me to go. Epic waste of money in this chick’s humble opinion. But, if there are followers out there that DO believe a vatoo or vajewel has value, let me know!

As I read my daughter’s school minutes for the month, one thing caught my eye immediately—the dates for the Annual Father/Daughter Dance. It suddenly occurred to me what we should be writing about this week, and that is, the incredibly valuable and fantastically important relationship between fathers and their daughters.

It’s no secret (given that it is written about on my company’s website) that I am the product of a single-father household. My mother sadly passed when I was an infant, so my father raised not just me, but my three brothers, by himself in a rural part of Upstate New York. Clearly, not an easy task, although to this day, I believe that raising a girl amid all that testosterone, was really his greatest challenge.

My father, you see, is the epitome of a ‘man’s man.’ He worked by day as a dentist, and during the evenings and weekends, prided himself a farmer, cattle rancher, mason and sportsman. My brothers and I regularly emerged from the warm comfort of our beds to be quickly shepherded into icy blizzards and below-zero temperatures to feed our 300 head of cattle. We built fences, grew corn and strawberries in large fields, drove tractors, bailed hay, and gained a tremendous comfort with the purest definitions of hard work. So, when I reached puberty, it pretty much boggled my poor father’s brain. He had, for years, raised his daughter just like he raised his sons. Without a female in the house—he knew no better—and did what he thought best. Fortunately, I was a late bloomer (age 14), but even so, when the fateful day came, he was ill-prepared to say the least.

Our elementary school, of course, had broached the subject of menstruation and procreation thanks to the old film ‘Sammy the Sperm and Eva the Ovum.” Anyone else remember that little gem? I therefore had a relative idea, by 5th grade, that menstruation would eventually become part of my fate, but never really talked about it, nor was I prepared for it when it arrived. When it did—oh boy—I was a nervous wreck. I wasn’t sure how I needed to manage it—and was without the proper ‘tools’ (maxi pads, liners, etc.)

Sadly, when I got my period, women were still expected to wear the huge, gigantic maxi pads WITH a plastic belt that wrapped around your waist! I swear…..it was horrifying! (Hmmm…did I just give away my ancient age?) Since then however, major strides have been made and young ladies today have many more options—including adhesive pads, reusable/washable ‘green’ cloth pads, menstrual cups, tampons and even organic options of each. But, let’s return to my poor father….

When I called his office to tell him about the start of my menstruation, he seemed dumbfounded and didn’t quite have the words to engage in a conversation. He fumbled over a few sentences suggesting that I call my Aunts to talk about it, and mentioned that he’d be home in a little while with some ‘supplies.’ I wasn’t sure what to do in the interim. Did I shower? Did I wad up some toilet paper in my panties to catch the blood? Was I to experiment with an old t-shirt? Needless to say, those few hours of waiting were troublesome for me as a young girl. The next day, while wearing a gigantic maxi pad my father had brought home from the store, I visited the school nurse. She put together, in a small box, samples of maxi pads and panty liners from Proctor & Gamble, and a brochure about ‘Getting Your Period.’ After school, I pulled out these items and poured over them as if they were the most valuable items I’d ever received. In the hour it took to review everything, I calmed down and felt much more comfortable with the changes my body was undergoing. It made a WORLD of difference.

The reason I share this story is two-fold. First, I was recently contacted by the incumbent middle school nurse from MY own middle school of days past, requesting a few Period Packs for them to keep on hand.

Her email read, “I am a middle school nurse with 1,000 sixth through eighth graders. We live in a widespread school district that is semi-rural. We also have a number of single fathers. This would be nice to give to these young ladies with no female role models in the home. I would appreciate a few kits. Thank you!”

It was if my past and current life suddenly collided……..!

Secondly, as I read the note about the Father/Daughter Dance, it gave me pause to realize that it isn’t just single fathers, but ALL fathers who play a role in the development of their daughters. Just as parents celebrate the tiniest of milestones together: first steps, first solid foods, first words, and successful toileting, so should both mom and dad be involved in celebrating the onset of their daughter’s menstruation.

Now, I realize this is territory that makes most men gag in disgust, but c’mon guys, your wives/girlfriends menstruate and you know all about it. Your little girl WILL become a woman one day. It’s a biological certainty—even if you opt to bury your head in the sand about it. And, what most men don’t realize is just how VALUABLE they become during this evolution in their daughter’s lives. Yes, you’ll be forced to stand the heat as your premenstrual little lady suddenly becomes mysterious and quieter around you, and occasionally barks for no reason at all. But, at the same time, treating her as special as you always have is paramount. And some days, it won’t be easy!

Given the nature of hormones and feminine outbursts, most men run for the hills when the women in their lives turn the corner towards PMS. Yet, imagine how that little girl of yours feels as these hormones surge endlessly through her being! She’s growing up, and going through puberty—yet remember, she’ll always be your daughter.

Simply sending the message, “I love you and you will always be my beautiful girl” can do wonders for a woman’s self-esteem. Knowing that there is a man in her life that she can trust and that loves her unconditionally will make an amazing difference-even if you don’t immediately feel the results.

So, I leave this as an open letter to all fathers…to at least consider being involved with your daughter’s cycle of puberty. It’s easy to toss this responsibility to your wife, girlfriend or a female sibling, but remember: you’ll be there at her wedding. You’ll celebrate that day just as you will the day your daughter gets her license or wins a trophy for the sport or activity within which she excels. You don’t have to run around and do cartwheels as your daughter enters puberty, but consider being a male cheerleader. Remind her how much you love her. Remind her how beautiful she is in your eyes, and finally, remind her that as her father, you’ll always be there for her.

These little gestures WILL make an impact….trust me.

To aid your precious daughter towards being prepared, consider sending her a Period Pack™. We offer several unique designs to introduce the concept of menstruation as well as celebratory items to make this step less tenuous for all involved. If you mention that this blog post as the reason you ordered, we’ll take $5.00 off your total purchase price to boot!

Let’s face it, we all love our technology.

Armed with our iPhones, iTouch, Androids, iPods, iPads, Wiis, Blackberries, Kindles, notebook computers, Facebook, Twitter, RSS feeds, Keurig machines, and even fancy ‘no key’ automobile starters, our society is amid a mad love affair with all things tech-savvy. I include myself in that bevy of fans, since I always carry at least one device.

What’s interesting is how technology gets integrated into our daily lives– in even the most unexpected ways.

Take for example the barrage of unique ‘menstruation’ applications that can be found across multiple computing platforms. These applications tell you when your period should be expected (so have pads, tampons or menstrual cups at the ready), when to expect Pre Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) symptoms to skyrocket, and when to watch your caloric intake. Most of these applications are obviously aimed at women–who typically know when Cousin Red or Aunt Flow will be making their monthly visit. Yet, even with the best layed plans, these applications can’t possibly work perfectly as women’s periods can shift from month to month due to living arrangements, post-partum, age, and prescription drug use. I can recall living with my sorority sisters and how often that arrangement screwed up my once-perfectly-timed menstrual cycle!!

Yet, available for free– up to $1.99 per download–the following applications advertise an ability to somehow manage a woman’s monthly bill in this fast-paced, always connected, super-digital and online era:

* Pink Pad Pro (Period Tracker)

* iMensies

I don’t yet have a favorite, but intend on trialing many of these applications personally to determine which, if any, deliver on their promise or cause me to move away from a paper-based calendar (which frankly, I do still use!).

Surprisingly, some application developers concoted the theory that MEN may benefit from a digital ‘period monitoring’ application too! Although, and not surprisingly, the applications suggest that women are volatile and that men should track menstrual cycles to protect themselves from a barrage of verbal or physical aggression that women somehow mask 21 days out of the month! I mean, really…can we step into the millenium already?

Alongside stereotypical worries about a frightning “PMSing woman,” apps such as Code Red, PMS Buddy and Period Tracker Companion supposedly tell men when they are ‘safe’ to discuss serious topics or accidentally leave the toilet seat up, or warn of an impending, dangerous onslaught thanks to ‘that time of the month.’

Being a woman myself, I don’t necessarily care for the testosterone-rich machissmo behind these applications. It’s true: SOME women can be negatively impacted by hormone fluxuations. By the same token, if any man on the face of the planet had a sudden surge of chemicals in their body causing them to swell and bloat, suffer migraines and contend with zits/breakouts, married with a completely irrational urge to assasinate everyone in their path, I’m guessing they may not be in the best of moods, either.

So, if any of you out there have thoughts/perspective on these new digital apps for tracking your period/menstrual cycle, please–by all means–share!

P.S. I came across this tray of “vagina cupcakes” that I thought, in my warped sense of self, were totally awesome I mean, this takes some serious time, effort and creativity, right? Now, I just need to find the bakery/baker that made them and add them as a gift option on the Period Packs website! Think they’ll sell???

I’m confident that all who see it know its meaning…BREAST CANCER AWARENESS.

Within the last 10 years or so, this beautiful pink ribbon has adorned everything from pens and t-shirts to notebook computers and PDAs. It’s an iconic and beautiful reminder of something so terribly tragic, and that is, the reality of breast cancer.

Cancer in any form is just plain…bad. But, breast cancer, with early detection, can oftentimes be mitigated.

I am today surrounded by beautiful strong women who have overcome their battle with the Boob Monster and live their lives with even more purpose and appreciation having endured that unexpected battle. (Patti P…..this means you!) There are others however, whom my love for was so incredibly great, who sadly lost their insurmountable battle against breast cancer (Katherine/ Harriet). Having seen both sides of this battle up close and personal, October is a very important month. It represents a 31-day period where all should learn as much as possible about breast cancer, prevention, and healing from it.

For the young ladies of the world, it is your most important time. I know, you are totally invincible at this stage of your lives. You are young, thin, super hot! Your skin is absolutely perfect and taut (i.e. NO cellulite…yet!), your hair silky, your butt high, and your boobs…as perky as you could ever hope them to be!

But, beware!

Young women around the nation have undergone cancer treatment for breast cancer. It isn’t an ‘old lady’ disease, and what’s more, it can strike any woman, at any time. The most optimal solution however is prevention–and to prevent, you’ve simply got to “feel your boobies!”

By conducting at least once monthly, self-completed breast exams (in the shower, at night before falling asleep in bed), young women can familiarize themselves with the makeup of their lovely breasts so that if anything changes, they will ‘feel’ it and can then alert their parents/caregivers and visit a doctor as soon as possible to have those changes further investigated. The goal of course is not to add fear, but rather, to add knowledge and comfort. For so many years, women (and men) have been trained to think of boobs as sexual objects. And, while they are, they are part of a woman’s biological makeup FIRST. Before shoving them into tight push up bras, or jogging them around the sports fields, we need to make sure they are cared for–as much as we care for our shaving needs, manicures/pedicures/facials, and highlights! Just a few short minutes can make a difference.

So lovely ladies–young and old (I’m of the old variety, mind you)–take some time to feel your boobs today!http://www.feelyourboobies.com/how2.htm.

For those of you who wish to support Breast Cancer Awareness, there is likely a Walk or event in/near your town at which you can volunteer, donate or participate! Just search: http://www.cancer.org/Involved/Participate/MakingStridesAgainstBreastCancer/index,. To locate/purchase unique “Pink” products, visit one of the sites below and you can uncover a ton of awesome goodies that when purchased, not only support the cause, but will provide a gentle reminder to conduct your own breast exams regularly–for preventions sake!

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness, Period Packs will donate $5 for every Period Pack sold to the American Cancer Society-Massachsuetts/Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. Our philanthropic “Pink Packs” program was created specifically to support young women in need because of the love we had for the special women we lost to this terrible disease.

We somehow hope that through all of our efforts, one day breast cancer will be a thing of the past.

Let’s face it ladies…even with the most fitting menstrual gear, the occasional leak is bound and determined to happen…most often on the day when we want it to the least!

Welcome Ruby’s Red Wash!!

Created by psychologist Dr. Carolyn DeForest, Ruby’s Red Wash is a stain remover designed just for women, to mitigate the challenges of menstrual blood-stains in their clothing. The best part…it dissolves even dried, set-in stains, so the thought of having to toss out pretty panties or worse, expensive couture, is no longer a concern. The pleasantly-scented and fully biodegradeable (i.e. environmentally safe) Ruby’s Red Wash is a proprietary concoction of live bacterial cultures that successfully break down stains in a matter of seconds. Unlike currently available chemicals and bleaches that can often lead to damaged clothing, Ruby’s is safe to use on all clothing types.

Dr. DeForest said, “My hope was that it [Ruby's] would fall into the hands of young women as a way of positively introducing them to their bleeding bodies. I think all women will appreciate not having to scrub out or throw out their underwear anymore.”

I’ve just ordered my first (and hopefully one of many, many more to come for inclusion in Period Packs gift boxes) bottle to have our focus group of ladies –moms and tweens alike– test drive this wonderful new invention to see if it really does deliver on its promise. We’re thinking that Dr. DeForest is onto something very special here.

Check it out for yourself at:http://www.rubysredwash.com/

******UPDATE******* (9/10/2011)

We took it upon ourselves to trial this product within a small focus group and the feedback came back the same–IT WORKS! Ruby’s Red Wash immediately begins to remove stains from clothing, and given some time to break down older stains, it can eliminate struggles with menstrual staining completely and organically. We recommend!!

So, when was the last time you were in a public restroom (at work, at the gym, or out on the town) where you needed to dispose of your used feminine hygiene products (i.e. tampon, pad or liner)?

C’mon…we’ve all had to contend with the silver ‘boxes’ that rest directly at eye-level within most public bathroom stalls—often overflowing with nasty looking used products that stink up the joint!

This is one of those elements of menstruation that we don’t openly discuss. Why? Because it is gross, embarrassing and icky!

Fortunately, Upstate New Yorker Ann Germanow, has taken direct aim at addressing used feminine hygiene product disposal. Along with her business partner and husband John, Germanow is seeking to change the way women dispose of their used feminine care items through a specially-designed, biodegradable, scented single-use plastic bag called SCENSIBLES.

(Side note: For menstrual cup wearers and reusable pad aficionados, you’ve good. In fact, there’s no need to read on unless you occasionally wear a disposable pad, tampon or liner product. However, not all of us can comfortably wear a menstrual cup. We’re simply more comfortable with disposable options. (forgive us….please!)

Anyway, the personal size, lightly scented SCENSIBLES baggies are an alternative to flushing tampons down the toilet or rolling up your used maxis in toilet paper—a lame effort at best and a complete waste of toilet paper, to boot! What’s more, SCENSIBLES contain built-in antimicrobial agents to inhibit the growth of odor causing bacteria and they are also manufactured with an additive to enable them to biodegrade in landfills, making them more environmentally practical.

The SCENSIBLES solution is beneficial not only for each individual woman, but cleaners of the bathrooms they use, and the follow-on patrons forced to contend with improperly disposed of used feminine hygiene products (imagine overflowing toilet, or worse, bloody-stained pads/tampons hanging out of a container on the wall at eye-level). C’mon…you’ve all seen these…and they are disgusting!

And, being disgusting isn’t the worst part. According to SCENSIBLES, restrooms account for fifty percent of service complaints—while only residing in 5% of total building space. The main areas of concern? Let’s start with G E R M S —those lovely little microbes that most frequently spread from person to person via contact with unclean restroom fixtures, as well as the overlooked danger of exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Since sanitary napkin disposal units are usually emptied once a day, they harbor O D O R S –making the restroom an unpleasant stop for all patrons. Finally, businesses must pay extra costs to have flushed tampons removed from plumbing and septic systems—which can be severely damaged by feminine care products disposed of in this manner.

The Germanows have not only patented their unique disposal option, but also provide a delivery system for their products so that they can be easily and commercially installed in public restrooms around the world. Women’s restrooms in Wegman’s supermarkets, the San Diego Zoo, the Washington State Ferry System, ball parks, hospitals, and many other buildings/businesses across the country now carry SCENSIBLES dispensing systems.

Fortunately, SCENSIBLES Personal disposal Bags for Feminine Care Products can also be purchased at www.scensiblesource.com and Amazon.com (as well as retail stores across the Northeast) for $3.50/box of 50
bags.

The company is so confident about their product, that if you contact them directly through their website, they’ll send a sample of their SCENSIBLES baggies for you to try for free! www.scensiblesource.com.

THANK YOU Ann and John. We’re not sure why it took so long for someone to come up with a solution for this problem, but we’re very, very glad you did!

Delicious aromas of fresh bread or cookies baking, freshly cut grass in summer time, the mist off the ocean waves at sunset, coconut oil at the beach, or freshly brewed coffee in the morning.

Mmmmmmmm…..very hard to resist.

From our choice of perfume or lotion, candles we choose, oils, and more, scent has clearly emerged as a powerful sense tying memories and experiences together through time. You may remember the lilac tree in grandmother’s garden, or apple pies made by mom. Memories, be they good or bad, have a huge influence on whether an
individual prefers particular scents. Research has proven that positive (and negative) scent achieves an emotional response and oftentimes, mental recollection. With it significant effect on emotion, memory and performance, it is no surprise that many businesses utilize scent in their overall corporate strategies.

Aromatherapy, as the use of scent is commonly referred to, is today leveraged by real estate brokers who understand well the power of scented candles and fragrant plug-in air fresheners and their ability to make homes more appealing to buyers (‘smell to sell’). Las Vegas casinos stream scented air throughout their gambling floors to encourage guests to stay and play. Even the feminine hygiene industry recognizes the value of scent as they manufacture pads and liners with baby powder-fresh scents to assist with odor management.

In fact, different scents can be used to transform an environment completely. For example, when infants or young children are cranky, colicky or ill-tempered, parenting books suggest diffusing scents of lavender and chamomile to calm them (Hence, the inclusion of these aromas in many off-the-shelf baby bath gels and lotions). For hard-working students and late-night office dwellers cramming for a test or completing a presentation, the scents of peppermint (concentration), eucalyptus and lemongrass help keep you awake.

Surprised? I was!

Below is a sampling of scents and their effect on us:

Chamomile: calming and soothing. Eases anger and anxiety.

Eucalyptus: fresh, cooling and invigorating. Promotes alertness.

Jasmine: alleviates anxiety and depression.

Lavender: calming.

Lemon: refreshing and energizing. Eases tension. Heightens mental clarity.

Peppermint: refreshing and stimulating. Increases alertness, relieves pain, indigestion, nausea and headaches.

Rosemary: a stimulant that promotes mental clarity and alertness.

I, personally, love my sense of smell. It is actually quite keen and acute, which can also be a problem when walking into an unclean gym locker room (you know what I’m talking about here…), or visiting the local farms on a hot day when cow patties are abundant.

Yet, understanding the value we place on our special olfactory glands, Period Packs has designed its new “Fresh Scent” Period Pack–available for sale beginning next week.

Within this special gift box are scented feminine hygiene products, breath mints, scented nail polish and lip gloss, basil-grapefruit scented wipettes and much more. In addition, we’ve added another element to this gift box—a lovely, rhinestone-laced flower hair accessory, hand crafted by Chic Boutique Creations.

We are so excited to bring this uber-feminine gift box to our clients and hope it will earn a warm reception!

Be sure to look for our updates next week!

While I may be a few years behind the real teen trends (being an old lady and all), I was horrified to read a report in a German newspaper about a topic I’d never heard of previously, called ‘slimming.’ For most readers of this blog, slimming typically refers to those things (diet, exercise and medications) that help us reduce the amount of body fat we carry. Sadly, this term has also been attached to the practice of getting intoxicated by inserting vodka-soaked tampons into the vagina or anus (males).

Eeeewwww….ick! And secondly…… WHAT????!!

Clearly there will be some who read this blog and think, “geez, that is a pretty creative way to consume alcohol–especially if you are underaged.” Then, there will be the remainder, like myself, who will stare mouth agape at the computer screen in disbelief–unable to intellectually grasp the fact that any human being would be willing (and interested) in placing an alcohol-laced tampon into their vagina (or in males, their anus) just to get ‘drunk.’

I realize I shouldn’t be surprised that younger generations are still attempting to find ways to consume alcohol when they aren’t yet legal to do so, but this concept really put me over the edge. For starters, just the idea of it. Second, the immense medical/physical damage it can do/could lead to for anyone considering this method.

Alcohol will most certainly dry, crack and burn whatever it comes in contact with, but what is yet unknown is aside from the initial affects, what could this do to a woman’s ability to have children in later years? Add in a lovely dose of infection and damage to vaginal walls, and the result is certainly a concoction for serious problems.

The main reason teens have opted to leverage this practice, which originated in the United States and has since grown in popularity in European countries, is to attempt to hide the smell of alcohol consumption, while still gaining the ‘high’ received from consuming it. The reality is that it is impossible to ‘hide’ the effects of alcohol consumption and most warn that even if Facebook pages or other Internet sites suggest you can, they are not accurate, and certainly are not truthful.

So, for any young women (or men) out there that think this may be a good idea, please THINK again and avoid placing anything soaked in alcohol in your private parts. Keep the super absorbancy tampons in the bathroom and out of your genitalia…..please!

Now, many women (me included) go right for ‘granny panties’ (defined as panties that cover the entire rear, hips and a large portion of the lower stomach) when Cousin Red comes calling. You know the garments I’m writing about—the big ones that aren’t really sexy, but are both comfortable and absolutely functional. They keep your pads in place, your water bloat in check, and just generally make you feel OK during the 3-7 days when you aren’t feeling so hot. Isn’t comfort on your period of key importance? If I’m running on the treadmill, doing a load of laundry, chasing the kiddies around, or just sitting at the computer writing, the last thing I want to worry about is leakage. I want the comfort that I won’t leak all over my clothes or onto the bed sheets at night for that matter.

Enter the women of Sexy Period™. After meeting in a entrepreneurship class their junior year at Brown University, Sexy Period founders Julie Sygiel and Eunice Png formulated the idea of fashionable, leak-resistant underwear. These two fascinating young women from the East coast have since patented and now manufacture what their company has staked as unclaimed market—“functional lingerie.”

The entrepreneurial young women spent two years developing their patent-pending leak resistant and breathable fabric—which has since been stitched into delightfully beautiful underwear designs that women can wear any day of the month—even heavy flow days—without worry.

This is an amazing breakthrough for menstruating women, since all of us know that on heavy flow days, the occasional leak can occur—leaving our clothing (sometimes very expensive couture)– marked with red dots. It’s not fun, and it certainly doesn’t make one feel feminine.

According to SexyPeriod.com: “Sexy Period™ panties are made of fabric that has 3 distinct layers to keep you protected! The inner layers wick away and absorb fluids, while the outer layer traps and prevents leaks so you’re kept feeling comfortable and confident. Our breathable, leak resistant panties make embarrassing period spills a thing of the past!”

Gosh, that’s pretty confident!

Priced at between US $32-$44 depending on design/size, these panties may not be the brand that I stock my entire underwear drawer with just yet. However, I think the price is reasonable for a garment touting absolute protection from leaks onto my expensive jeans, gowns and business suits. I think “The Underwear Girls” (as Julie and Eunice were known on campus) may be onto something…..

Check them out at http://www.sexyperiod.com

I’m off to purchase a pair myself to determine if what they are selling is true. If anyone who reads this blog has tried a pair themselves, please leave a comment with your experience and personal feedback.

This past week was very educational in that we learned more about organics. Organics? Yes, organics.

Most young women (and their older counterparts of which I am a proud member…) are very familiar with name-brand tampons, pads and liner products (i.e. Always, Stayfree, o.b., Tampax, Playtex…you get the idea). However, in the last several years, new companies have emerged to redefine feminine care products using organic materials–definitely in support of the growing ‘green’ movements.

One such company, Seventh Generation, based in Vermont, have taken direct aim at delivering green, organic feminine hygiene products, among other green products. The very generous company sent a box of pad and tampon samples (very nice of them) so that our clients too can experience the benefit of organic products.

According to Seventh Generation, conventional tampons are commonly made from a blend of cotton and rayon. The rayon is often whitened (or bleached) with chemicals containing chlorine, which can result in dangerous, chlorinated toxins being released into the environment. Over time, these chlorinated toxins can accumulate. Beyond this, there are concerns that the conventionally grown cotton used in standard tampon design, is treated with pesticides, frangrances and dyes–many of which are identified as ‘human carcinogens.’

Seventh Generation organic cotton tampons contain cotton grown without pesticides and not bleached with chemicals.

Some of our clients have already asked us whether or not organic tampons avert TSS (written about in an earlier blog post) when compared to other name brands. What we learned is that, Dr. Philip Tierno of New York University Medical Center, a leading expert on Toxic Shock Syndrome, believes that TSS results from the ‘rayon’ fibers in conventional tampons. His book, THE SECRET LIFE OF GERMS, outlines that to date, there have been no reported cases of TSS based upon the use of all-cotton tampons.

Hmmmmph! Now that was an eye-opening factoid that just cannot be ignored.

Since our goal is to not only celebrate, but EDUCATE our clients about available products, we’re planning on running a promotion to sample Seventh Generation products within all our orders until the very generous supply the company sent, is eliminated. Heck, we’re actually going to trial them ourselves to test out how organics compare as far as look, feel, and absorbancy and will report back our mini focus group findings in a later post.

Until then, on this day that celebrates all things ‘green,’ (St. Patrick’s Day), we would like to recommend investigation of Seventh Generation‘s organic products.

Given the growing concern about toxins — which has reached our eyes and ears — and our table as well–Period Packs is committed to helping spread the word about the benefits of organic and we’re now considering building an ‘organic’ Period Pack containing Seventh Generation products for those families and young women interested in a more green and organic route to feminine care.
